Ingredients

6 Servings
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 100 g bread crumbs
  • 50 g butter
  • 1 kg butternut squash
  • 200 g cheddar cheese
  • 30 g flour
  • 500 ml milk
  • 0.5 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt

Directions

Step 1
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
Step 2
In a large pot, bring water to a boil and cook the cubed butternut squash for 10-15 minutes, or until tender. Drain and set aside.
Step 3
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it forms a paste.
Step 4
Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
Step 5
Remove the sauce from heat and stir in the grated cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Mix until the cheese is fully melted.
Step 6
Combine the cooked butternut squash and the cheese sauce, stirring gently to coat the squash evenly.
Step 7
Transfer the mixture to a baking dish and sprinkle the bread crumbs evenly over the top.
Step 8
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
Step 9
Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
